Jesus himself came up and walked by their side, but something prevented them from recognizing him. He said to them "What matters are you discussing as you walk along?"
They stopped short, their faces downcast.

That is Luke 24:17, which the NWT renders as : "He said to them: “What are these matters that YOU are debating between yourselves as YOU walk along?” And they stood still with sad faces."

They looked sad.

I believe in this particular scripture they were still grieving for their Christ and even discussing between themselves some of the things He had said to them. So they had a mourning or grieving look a downcast look.

this was after jesus died. They didn't think he would raise from the dead... Well, he did.
