On a regular jig saw the blade moves up and down with the teeth of the blade cutting on the up stroke.
With an orbital jig saw the blade is moving up and down with a circular motion as viewed from the side. (The blade still cuts on an up stroke.)
The circular motion has several advantages:
1) The cut chips of material are cleared away from the blade more efficiently as the blade backs away slightly from the cut on the down stroke
2.) The saw is easier to use as less forward pressure needs to exerted by the operator. The blade makes a slight forward motion as it cuts on the up stroke.
3.) The blades last longer - less friction is generated because the blade is lifted away from the work on the down stroke. The blade runs cooler and lasts longer

In a non-orbital jig saw, the blade just goes straight up and down. In an orbital, the path of the blade travels in an orbit instead of just vertically. During cutting stroke, the blade moves forward into the work as well on the return stroke the blade move away from the work. My saw has an adjustable orbit. Using a wider orbit cuts much much faster but also leaves a rougher cut.

OK, think of the drive arm on an old railroad engine's drive wheel.
The same printable only the drive arm is attached to the blade. As the wheel inside the saw rotates, the blade goes up and down in a smooth motion. It makes the saw run smooth and the weight or the wheel helps with inertia.

The blade contacts at upward motion and disconnect at downward motion. Unlike the straight line motion, the blade contacts both upward and downward motions.
