I have an Australian Cattle Dog who is about 3 years old. My father is working on the parlor (he's working on the stairs and soon the wooden floors) and he recently finished the stairs which my dog Sheba scratched up from going up and down to look out the window. Our front door has a glass window in the middle that she sits in front of and jumps up on when people walk by.Now the glass is all scratched up, which my father is pretty aggrivated about. Basically we have a problem with her scratching up everything. How can I get her to stay out of the room and off of the stairs? We've tried gates but she knocks them down with enough effort. My father is ready to drop her off at the ASPCA and that's the last anyone wants but my dad. What can I do?

She's young and she's full of energy, and she's BORED. There are gates that will work but they actually mount into the door frame, or have brackets that embrace the door frame.
But the big issues are-she needs her nails trimmed properly, possibly have those plastic nail covers applied- she needs regular vigorous supervised activity and lots of it, not just laying around in the yard, but jogging, fetch, frisbee, and a lot of it- she needs toys. This is an outdoor working breed, very energetic, intelligent and needs a task. Good luck.

3 year old can still learn and any age . the dog needs to know you wont give up on what your teaching it . show the dog in a nice way the nails and hold the foot firmly so pays attention . and the scratches . trim the nails a bit . not so ---can't use them . OR, get a chain ! keep it out !!! keep the dog .

We nailed our baby gates to the door frame so our dogs can't knock them down.
