Adult acne is the worse! I've been struggling with it with years and unfortunately have scars. I spent countless of hundreds between the over the counter stuff and the dermatologist. Products like ProActiv made it worst!!! I am on a strict regime which has cleared me up completely. No more cystic acne for me. So here is what I do. In the morning I wash my face with Mary Kay Deep Cleanser 3 and then with a cotten ball swab my face with peroxide. I then immediantly moisturize with Mary Kay Oil Control Lotion 3. At night before going to bed I cleanse my face with the above mentioned cleanser and apply Mary Kay's Acne Clearing Gel. I exfoliate once a week. If I notice my face getting too dry I switch to using peroxide every other day. Remember to stick with oil-free products, drink lots of water and don't pick. After 5 years it's a battle I'm finally winning. Good luck!

There are a variety of products available at any drug store or supermarket for acne. Look for ones containing Benzoil peroxide (Oxy, Clearasil, etc.). Follow the instructions on the package as to how often to apply it. These typically work very well, though they may dry your skin out if you overuse them, so you'll have to play around to see how often to apply them for the best results with your skin.

You can also buy facial washes specifically formulated for people with oily skin and acne, and you might want to consider trying that as well. Make sure you wash your face at least once a day, and always after you've exercised or gotten sweaty.

If your acne is particularly bad and over-the-counter treatments are not helping, see a dermatologist. There are many prescription medications that work wonders for severe acne (my brother had the type that scars as well, and he took an oral medication as a teenager that really helped a lot). You'd want to weigh the risks with the benefits, as some of them have side effects or can cause birth defects if you get pregnant while taking them. But it's definitely worth asking about if your acne is severe and nothing else you try seems to help.

I experience a very similar pattern, no teenage acne but as an adult it got pretty bad.

I started using an prescription antibiotic lotion called Clindamycin and it cleared right up.
