Unfortunately, there is really nothing you can do but ask them nicely. Everyone has personal habits that others may not be fond of. You also need to consider, perhaps your co-worker quit smoking and chewing gum is a way to help aid in that. It could be worse--they could not shower and smell really bad, or they could be very rude and controlling. Popping gum doesn't seem the worst case scenario you could be in!

Just politely say something along the lines of, "Would you mind not popping your gum? I'm having a hard time concentrating on my work because of the noise." Simple and direct, but polite, pleasant and respectful.

If that doesn't work, you might have to get your supervisor or HR involved. Or, if you're in a position where you're not answering phones all day, maybe bring earplugs or an iPod to block it out.

you should get some gum and pop it in his/her ear and they might realize its annoying. When they say something you can say "see I wanted you to be in my shoes before I asked you to please try and stop popping your gum"
