well, folks generally want to know if you and they have something in common. they don't just want to know if you believe in "God" ... they want to know if you believe in the same god they do.
in the case of Christians ... being Christian isn't just a religion, it's a social exercise. if you are Christian you and the questioner can relate to each other thru your Love of Jesus. if you aren't Christian they have the opportunity to proselytize.

One, or all, of three reasons.
1. Because they're insecure in their beliefs and want to be vindicated... they KNOW the answer already... of COURSE people believe in god, and there's a high probability that people on this site probably do too.
2. Because they're new to the site and they forget that they need to use the search function.
3. If not on the site, because they're just curious.

Security in numbers. The more people that believe, the more valid their belief comes.
I know, personally, that there are not many atheist in this small community. I am basically on my own. But, I am secure in my belief, or lack or, and am comfortable with that.
