Here's the thing. I have a 10 week Pomeranian who'm I absolutely adore! When I first got him 3 weeks ago, I took 2 weeks off from work to help him get aclimated to my home. During these 2 weeks, I pampered him. He'd want to get up and play at 4 AM and I'd get up and play with him (I know it's wrong and I have corrected this and have made him adjust to my schedule). I potty trained him to use Weewee pads, etc. Now this is my first week back to work and I've sectioned him off in the kitchen with loads of toys, food & water, a Kong ball, a soft blanket, his favorite teddy bear, I leave all lights on, I leave the TV on and I play some soft music in the back ground so the house is still the same but the only difference is I'm not there. My brother checks on him when his work shift allows. I leave my house around 8 AM and get home around 6 PM. When I walk in the door, it's all about him until about 12 AM (and of course I wake up early to play before I go to work). Can anyone relate? Outcome?

Than you all for the wonderul advice! The second I walk in the door, he goes crazy! If he can talk, this is what I imagine him saying:

"Oh my God!!!" "It's you! I can't believe it!" "Come get me! Hurry up, you're not moving fast enough!" And then I see his little paws pushing through the little holes on the gate as if he's now deciding to break free. The second I pick him up, he's like a vibrating ball as he's trying to sniff every inch of my and lick me all over my face although I refrain from letting him like my face! He's picked up the nasty habit of eating his poop which is another issue I'm working on. His breath always smells like Eukanuba (which is what his poop smells like).

I'm also going to be introducing him to walk after his last set of shots in 2 weeks. I introduced him to his collar and leash and he absolutely hates both which is yet another issue that I will need to work on as well.

He's my baby and I want what's best for him.

I just got my baby (a 7 month old Papillon) in December so I can relate. Leaving him alone was hard for me to do, but we have a bond that cannot be broken. He gets so excited when I get home. You will have a perfectly healthy relationship with your dog. You can still go to work. He'll get used to your schedule and he will even start to anticipate when you get home! My step-dad had a strong bond with our old dog and he was only home on the weekends (he is a truck driver). Just relax and enjoy the benefits of having a dog!! =D

Yes that's a long time to be away, but you seem to be doing awesome with what time you do have. As long as you have a set playtime, snuggle time, and maybe a short walk, your relationship will continue to grow. I'm the same way. When we got our pup, I actually stayed home for 4 months to get her adjusted as well as train her. (shes a Shepherd/cattle dog mix and had major anxiety issues)..Now that I'm back to work I make sure I get up early to play with her, and walk ,play, and snuggle her and my other dog every night. My life revolves around them, so yes I can relate..Best of luck and continue your good work.

I think you can deffinately still have a relationship with him. You are doing all the right things by leaving the television on. This probably makes him feel a lot less alone. If you notice however, that your dog is becoming de-tached from you, you should probably make note to make sure he gets out with someone while you are away at work. Hope this helps!

Absolutely you can still develop a great relationship. As much as we'd all love to just dote on our pups, like everyone (or most people anyway lol), they have to understand that it's not always all about them. You seem to be doing fine, he's got his own area and plenty of things to keep him occupied and comfortable. Don't forget, training is also bonding so it's not all about playing. I also like to take my dog to the dog park so she can also develop her social skills not only with dogs, but with humans as well, so if you can find a doggie park nearby, I highly recommend it.

Don't worry, I leave my puppy at home too and after she destroys the house and craps in my shoes we have a roaring great time and do it all again the next day.

I can relate. It's reallly tough those first few weeks. It gets better and as long as your dog gets enough exercise and is properly trained, it's okay. And it'll get bettter.
