People with real acute pain conditions, such as broken ribs, very rarely ever develop addiction when they use medications like oxycodone as prescribed to relieve the pain. So it is o.k. to use as your doctor prescribed. However, if you have a history of addictions you may want to be more cautious.

That said, the pain medicine is for your comfort. If you don't need it more than 2x a day- then that is fine. There is nothing wrong with it. Sometimes with traumatic pain, such as broken ribs, people may only have pain when they are very active, or when they are laying down to sleep. If you know you are going to do something that causes the pain you can take it before hand.

However, if the pain is constant, taking it 4x a day makes sure that the medicine it is continuously in you system. (The medicine last only 6 hours in your body.) Studies show that for constant pain, taking a medication scheduled achieves better pain control at a lower dose.

The only other thing I would suggest is that you not take it more than 4x a day. If you think you need more talk to your doctor.

Also, make sure you have a laxative available if you need it. Some pain pills can cause constipation.

If two is controlling your pain that should be fine, however, if your pain is bad take them as prescribed. Your Dr should adjust your dose as your rib heals. Healing occurs faster when pain is controlled. When you are in pain your body concentrates on dealing with the pain and not the healing process. While it is true that oxycodone can be addictive if abused, it is a good pain control medication. Some medications are labeled IR which means immediate release of the pain med and some are labeled CR or SR which means controlled or sustained release. This means that the pain med is released a little at a time through out an 8-12 hour time frame.
If you are worried about becoming addicted, talk to your Dr. He/She will give you specifics on how to use it. Maybe your pain would be controlled with Tylenol or ibuprofen...don't discount the good effects of over the counter meds.

Broke ribs hurt & there is nothing U can do except let time pass till they heal. About 4 weeks is what Ur lookin at. During that time DO NOT worry about getting addicted to that pain med. Your Dr. will cut U back, even change what he is giving U. U will not have to worry about getting addicted in this short time. I broke 3 on my left side 2 years ago & I know even breathing hurts. Take the meds so Ur comfortable. In 1 month the Doc will not have U get addicted by the way he cuts U back & changes the meds. Hope this helps U. Good luck you will be alright with out addiction.

One thing you have to realize, is the short time that you would be on the oxycodone is usually not long enough to become addicted to it.
That's why it is a controlled drug to be dispensed by a physician.
People that become addicted are long time users. Users who stay on it for months and months.

Take your medicine the way it was prescribed and follow your doctors orders. You should be fine unless you have other addictions. If you have a natural addictive personality, you might want to call your doctor and request something that is not so addictive.

Take the Oxycodone as you need it. When you are in a lot of pain, you won't take the deeper breaths needed to fill your lungs & prevent pneumonia. Don't worry. You will naturally cut down on the pain medicine as your body heals.

Good luck!
