Depends on where you live. But in California, there are two acadamies. One is held during the day and is 8 hours long, five days a week for 6 months. The other is held on nights and weekends for the working type. This one is from 6pm to 10 every night, and then every saturday and some sundays all day.
Either way, there is probably a class at the nearby community college. You will most likely have to take an entrance exam and pass a physical agilities course. The academy itself is extremely physical and tough. There is physical training three days a week that consists of running and other physical challenges.
There is alot of tests and homework. You will be required to memorize alot of laws and policies. Good luck.

Depending on what state you live in --------some departments will run an ad in the newspaper and then you apply to the department and in turn th department will put you through the academy. Other academies you will have to pay for then try to get hired. Academy is only as hard as you make it to be. You will have atleast 8 or 9 hrs a day of classroom for a number of weeks(al depends on state you live). You will have PT's (physical training-some easy, some not so easy. I am not certain how long the academy is now as when I went in late 69 -71(was2 yr program) Over the yrs. I have been to a total of nine(refresher classes) and those only lasted from one week to as much as 4wks.

Right^
Every state is different, and some Cities require an additional academy to learn THEIR way of doing things. Some states (FL) you have to have an agency sponsor you, just to be considered for acceptance. In Georgia, you can either be sent (and it be paid for) by an agency (AND they pay you a wage while you are in training!), or pay for yourself to go, prior to being employed somewhere.
Sometimes it is easier to work in the Jail, or E-911 first, and ease yourself in...(Often the older officers will respect you more for having waited and gained a little age and experience)
Hours required for the whole course vary by state.
Usually it will be a full (8-9 hour)day with a lunch hour. Some weeks will be all academic/ law, and others will mix practical (hand-to-hand) or firearms with the rules and regs, safety, liability classes, OC spray, search & seizure laws, haz-mat, vehicle pullovers, domestic law, Accident Investigation, drug identification, etc... We were tested weekly, then had a final at the end of 8 weeks.
AND THEN once you actually get hired somewhere, you will learn how the department wants things done, or what you can get away with, legally.
Good luck!

I could tell you from my experience, the hours can depend on your status. As some that was appointed at a reserve level, I went for 22 weeks. My week was comprised of every Saturday for about 4 weeks then it went to Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for 20 weeks. We had 8 hours classroom and 4 hours of physical training. We had 3 law exams, 1 practical and one physical exam. Again this was based upon my P/T status. MA academies you have to be sponsored by a Police Department. We had approx 160 hours of training. Most of the studies were geared to constitutional law and criminal law.

Academies vary - depends on your area....the Academy I attended was 4 months long (approx) and we attended M-F.
Check your local police or sheriff's office and inquire about a local academy and what they require. CHP differs from PD and SO's. Also you can look on line at your local 2 year college and check out what they have to offer.....you can also take some criminal justice classes to see if you are interested in law. Good luck!

academy- day academy is usually 8-10 hr. days with 1-2 hrs. of pt-physical training followed by intense classroom study. most academies now are 20-22 weeks in length- you would have to be sponsored by your state, local, or county police authority
