Approximately: Hostile deaths: 47,359. Non-hostile deaths: 10,797.. Missing in Action: 2,338. POWs: 766 (114 died in captivity) VW Memorial says 58,253 to date. 75 have been added since 1997
Aprox. Total US 58,253. The missing in action change this number constantly. Plus those that died outside Vietnam in Cambodia Thailand and Laos. forgotten unidentified CIA (my friends). Numbers vary by source and may never be known exactly.
So 58,250 US and 230,000 South Vietnamese Army (ARVN).
They died for nothing. We left. Sen. Ted Kennedy and the Democrats cut off the promised moneys to support the Vietnamese against the North. The South collapsed without the promised bullets, air support, and fuels. Helicopters rescued several thousand from the embassy in Saigon. When the North took over 175,000 Montagnard men, women, and children were hunted down and killed. 10,000 Vietnamese, US collaborators, were killed right off. 250,000 S. Vietnamese were put into reeducation camps for up to 10 years. 60,000 died there. 1 million boat people escaped Vietnam. 1.5 million drowned trying to escape. 2,000,000 died in the killing fields of Cambodia. 200,000 died when Vietnam attacked Cambodia.
America was demoralized and did nothing as 11 countries fell to Communism or dictators. Several million died across the globe from Nicaragua to Ethiopia to Iran to Angola.
6 years after the fall of Vietnam in 1981 President Reagan came on the scene and rebuilt the military and confronted our enemies again.
Good question if a true exact total can be identified post it.
