A "sconce" or "wall sconce" is a general term for an item which is fixed / hung directly on a wall. These wall hung items are usually decorative and are modified in many ways to serve different functions. They are most typically flute shaped,( somewhat like a calla lily ) and with a flat top they can be used as a small shelf. They can also be found adapted to hold candles. The term "sconce" as in "light sconce" refers to a light fixture mounted on a wall as opposed to a ceiling hung fixture. You can also see sconces used as wall brackets projecting from the wall thru which a curtain rod / pole is slid and supported. These are a decorative alternative to typical drapery brackets and are sold with matching tie backs, rods etc. by Levelor, Kirsh, and other manufacturers.
Wall sconces date back ages and ages, and were originally made of wood and used to hold flaming torches to light castles, tunnels, caves, whatever. Today they are mainly decorative, alternative solutions used in a variety of applications.
I actually have 2 shelf type wall sconces made of plaster of paris on either side of my large stained glass window. They hold angel sculptures and matching candle holders, and suit the antique character of the window. Depending on their function, sconces can be found in all kinds of materials from wood to plaster, metal, glass, etc.
Hope this answers your question.

A sconce was originally a little dish shaped disc below a candle stick or candle wall light to catch melting wax. Still used on electric lights of the traditional syle as a decorative feature.

A sconce is not a shelf. It is a light fixture mounted on a wall, whether electric, candle or oil.
