Braces actually aren't tightened, they just feel like it. The arch wire is changed out every month or so and new elastics are placed, these hold the wire in position. It feels like they are tightened because the new wire is a different size and it starts to help move the teeth which have slowed down with the previous wire. Every time it's changed it's a different size and starts the movement of your teeth again. The doctor keeps changing the wire to achieve the correct position, or alignment for your upper and lower teeth to match in occlusion. So to answer your question, no it doesn't hurt to get them tightened, but it can be uncomfortable for a day or two. Ask your doctor if he recommends Advil or Motrin for temporary pain. Sorry for the class on Ortho, but you can use the advice the next time you see your doctor and ask questions that may impress him or her. Good luck!

If your talking about the braces for straightening your teeth, the actual procedure doesn't hurt, but when you get a new thicker wire it starts to irritate and put alot of pressure on your teeth. It just makes your whole mouth feel sore. Usually the pain lasts about a week and you get used to it. Every time I got mine tightened i had hard time eating things that were hard.

Yes. You can decrease the pain with an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or aspirin. Drinking ice water can help as well. The pain is not enough to keep you up at night but it is enough to make you avoid certain foods. It is worst for the first 48 hours after an orthodontic appointment and is ususally gone by the 3rd or 4th day. Its not really too bad and its definately worth it.

Um, let me get this loud and clear to you YES. I haven't got mine tightened yet but I've heard my friend's stories and they freak me out.

It really isn't "tightened" but adjusted. There is sometimes discomfort when you get adjusted (new wire&ligatures) but it is generally mild and goes away.
