It bothered satan so he had it removed so kids could take guns and knives to school.

Prayer was not removed from school. If a child wants to say a prayer before their math test, they can. School sanctioned prayers are not allowed. Example: they cannot use the P.A. to broadcast the prayer throughout the school.
It is a touchy subject, but one that I think is handled properly. Also, there are many schools that are truly not in compliance with the laws regarding prayer in the schools. Nothing is said because generally the community, and those invovled, don't say anything about it.
It isn't just schools, it is the public sector in general. At the County Commissioners meeting each week here, they pray. They should not, but they do. No one has complained to this point, so nothing has ever been done about it.

Listen! I'm a Jewish person and for years I had to listen to the teacher read morning prayers in public school. They were almost always from the New Testament. Why should I have been subjected to that? Is is okay with you if we bring prayer back to the schools only if the prayers are Jewish ones? How would you feel about that? Why don't you at least think about what you say before you say it?

It still hasn't. At the honour roll party we had, the assistant principle was handed the mike and she started praying. It was a rather awkward moment for me.
EDIT ('cause I remembered it late)-
A couple of weeks ago a man was sitting outside the cafeteria with a million little red books in front of him. It turned out that they were the New Testament, and the people come every year to offer a free book. It was optional, and the man did not even talk to you unless you talked to him.

I still had prayer in school up until the early seventies.
It's a shame.
Even the national anthem use to be played.

It was removed when people finally realized that there are many different religions and many ways to G-d, and no one group had a monopoly on their religion controlling things-like school prayers.

hi ,
my mother's generation had prayer in school and she was born in 1940 by the time I got to school in 1970 it was gone so I'd have to say in the 60's when drugs took over.

It was during the mid to late 50's as I recall. It may have been at the behest of "mad" Madyln Murray "O'Hair(sp), a prominent atheist of that time.
