The process of having them put on is not, but once your teeth start moving they can be pretty painful. It pretty much depends on how bad your teeth are as of how badly they will hurt.

Getting them put on can hurt a little bit if your teeth are sensitive (they have to dry and clean the tooth surface, and it can feel icky), or if they have to put bands around your molars (I don't know if they still do that, but I had bands, and they used a lot of force getting them on). Once they are on, there isn't exactly pain, it's more like pressure - you can feel the pressure against your teeth. It might be sore for a couple hours after an adjustment, but that's it, really. Sometimes you get canker sores from rubbing wires or whatever but it's more inconvenient than painful.
Totally worth it to have straight teeth. Have no fear of pain, because if you're afraid it'll hurt, it suddenly will.

Everybody's different. It depends on how much you need to move your teeth. Most of my friends that had braces told me it only hurt them when they had to have them tightened. For me, it was more than 3 months before I could eat anything more substantial than applesauce. However, the end results justify the means! I thought that my mom was trying to torture me at first, but now, I appreciate totally that she put me through that experience. Especially when I see other people with messed up teeth!
Good luck!

Hey I got braces when i was in the 8th grade i had to wear them until i was in the 10th grade i wont tell you they wont hurt because they will feel funny when you first get them cause your not used to them but after awhile you'll forget their on their but when you go to the dentist and they take the old wires off and put the new ones on with the colors you want they'll be sore but in the end when you finally walk outta their with nothing on your teeth you'll be thinkin that really wasnt all that bad after all..Good luck and GOD BLESS everything will be fine.

Getting them doesn't hurt. Having them is uncomfortable at times. You might have to go back a few times to get them to snip the wires sticking out so they're not poking your cheek. Make sure you floss and brush and stay away from Doritos and hard prezals (for some reason these are the two food items that cause breaking braces). Also get yourself some dental wax to cover the metal when it is poking into your cheeks.

Sara,
Hey! I have never got braces but close to it!! I have tons of friends who do and they told me Its not so much Hurt but pressure!! Getting braces takes time to get use to!! The worse part of it is the tighting process!! Only because it is pushing your teeth together in place where they should be to be perfect and straight!! A little bit of pain, yes!! But its not something that wont go away after a while!! A little bit of pain wont hurt much!! Like they say though Pain is Beauty!! Just be lucky its only a little bit of pain!! LOL!!

it will be really sore after you get them on and after the orthodontist tighten them every month. However, it is all worth it in the end. Good luck!
