Depends. What kind of companion are you looking for? A chow will need lots of exercise, chihuahua won't. Both are prone to different health problems. I'd go see both and decide which liked me better!

That really depends on what type of personality and behavior you are looking for in a dog. Chow Chow's and Chihuahuas are very different. You should research both breeds and then make your decision.

Chihuahuas:
American Kennel Club (AKC) Toy Group
These are very small dogs that weigh 2 to 6 pounds.

Personality:
Good companion dog, bold and saucy. Swift moving to avoid being stepped on. Strong-willed and intensely loyal. Gives and demands affection. Intelligent. Fiercely protective of his person and his turf. Responds enthusiastically to proper, gentle (positive reinforcement) training. Usually welcomes the company of another dog.

Behavior:
Children: Not recommended for children.
Friendliness: Moderately protective.
Trainability: Slightly difficult to train.
Independence: Needs people a lot.
Dominance: Low.
Other Pets: Good with other pets if raised with them from puppyhood.
Combativeness: Tends to be fairly dog-aggressive.
Noise: Likes to bark.

Chow Chow
AKC Non-sporting group.
Medium sized dog that averages 70 lbs.

Personality:
Usually well-mannered, but can be willful and protective. Bossy. Serious and very independent. Often a one-person dog, very loyal to his family, though he may act reserved, even with them. If strangers push themselves on this dog, he may become aggressive. This very dominant breed requires dominant owners.

Behavior:
Children: Best with older, considerate children.
Friendliness: Very wary of strangers; highly protective.
Trainability: Slightly difficult to train.
Independence: Needs people a lot.
Dominance: High.
Other Pets: Generally good with other pets.
Combativeness: Tends to be fairly dog-aggressive.
Noise: Likes to bark.
This dog will also need excessive grooming because of it's lng, fluffy hair.

Chihuahua....definately! Chow is not a very friendly breed. Chihuahuas are friendly, loyal and good alarm dogs. Plus, they require lots less food.

Unless you are busy. Chows could care less if you are around. But Chihuahuas need lots of attention.

depends on the room you have to keep a dog. I hear Chows can be a little mean at times, and chihuahuas, are so small. big difference there but if i had to have one or the other . THE TACO DOG

Chow's are very cute, but if you have kids go with the chihuahua, since sometimes chows can be aggressive with kids and could just turn.

The insurance company I work for has a list of dogs known to bite. chow's are on that list. I would go with the chihuahua.

Well, Depends on what you want it for. Do you want it for a companion, or a companion that can do things. A chihuahua is cute, but they arent worth anything. They are not able to go on a run with you(very well) or wont swim much. But a chow would be able to run with you and swim well. Chihuahua are less work, with small bodies, and short hair.

Drastically different dogs. Do you want a larger breed or smaller breed? Does your living situation have room for a larger breed? Out of those two, I would have choose Chihuahua because I don't care for chows.
