A friend of mine swears it does, but I have a hard time believing that. After all, if I held my hand over someone's flesh, it would grow warm from the body heat between my skin and theirs. But my friend says that that's the Reiki working.

So, does it really work and has anyone ever had it done on them?

No sis, but I know some people who have and they swear it works. Now, please note, this was in therapy and not part of a religion. I would like to find out more about it as I did a lot of work with "touch" that was similar back in college and it was way powerful stuff.

No more than any other relaxation method. The 'healing' effects aren't true - they have never been demonstrated under controlled conditions.

Edit: People, Touch Therapy was debunked by a NINE YEAR OLD GIRL. Who then became the youngest person to be published in a medical journal for the results. I think her name was Emily Rosa.

Much of it appears to be a psychological/placebo effect. It's almost a form of guided meditation, and for stress-exacerbated illnesses it can have benefits.

My acupuncturist did it on me once when I was having a panic attack, and it helped massively. I don't think it works for anything that isn't stress-related, but we can all use companionship and relaxation.

Of course, for the same price, you can usually get a really nice facial at a spa, which often includes massage. Pretty much the same thing, benefits-wise.

It would be warmth beyong what someone's body heat would be between you.

Yes you can pass energy between people and it can be used to heal.
