Yes...for the 40 week pregnancy it begins counting from the first day of your LMP (last menstrual period). Doctors count that way since most women can tell when their last period started as compared to conception. So really you aren't pregnant weeks 1 and 2 since you really get preggo mid cycle.

So if you started your last period 5 weeks ago...you are five weeks pregnant and the baby's gestational age is 3 weeks.

The only way is if you know exactly when the first day was of your last menstral cycle. Then just count the weeks. Lets say your first day of your last menstral was on November 27, 2006, then you would be approx. 7 weeks preggers by now. Usually they count 9 days after the first day of your last menstral so if it was on 11/27/06, count ahead 9 days making it, December 6, 2006 was probably when you got pregnant and you would be more like 5 weeks.

you need to go as soon as you find out you are pregnant--the doctor needs to get you on prentals right away.
after that though, it's usually every month until you are about 7 months along--then you go to every 2 weeks between 34 & 36 weeks you will start going every week.
this is all depending on your particular doctor of course, and whether or not anything is wrong with your pregnancy, if so the doc may want to see you more often.

if you know when the first day of your last period was, you can determine how many weeks along you are. once you miss a period, you're 4/5 wks pregnant (even though you've really only been pregnant for about 2 wks - that's how they count it) If you don't know the first day of your last period it's pretty hard to know without an ultrasound or an exam. some symptoms might appear at certain times (sore boobs in wk 5, nausea wks 6/7) but it's not reliable way to tell

You should go to the doctor right away to confirm the pregnancy and get advice. For example, early in a pregnancy you want to make sure you are getting adequate folic acid. Folic acid helps prevent a multitude of birth defects such as neural tube defects (defects of the brain and spine) and spina bifida.

You can try. Think of the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and the begininng of week 1 and start counting. So, if your LMP was December 7, you would be 5 weeks today!

I would go right away, so you can confirm the pregnancy and the doctor can give you a list of foods to stay away from.
