What is wrong with washing your hair everday? Like what damage does it cause, why is it good to skip a few days? I know a girl who doesn't wash her hair every other week, how can I do this? After a day or so its wicked greasy!

I wash my hair every other day. I don't think it's healthy to wash your hair every day. It strips it of all its natural oils. If I don't have anywhere to go or if I'm not going to work I will leave it. I can't usually go more than two days though. I don't know how anyone could wash their hair every other week. It's also better to wash your hair in warm water, not hot.

The only problem with washing your hair everyday, would be the product you are using, and/or the routine. If every day that you wash, you blow dry it, that is hard on the hair. Shampoos can also be drying to the hair and you should avoid using them on the hair shaft and ends, just cleanse the scalp and roots. There are allot of sulphates in shampoo (detergent) that tend to have a drying effect and the oils in the hair are essential for the hair's moisture. The problem with daily washing and trying to break away from that routine, is that natural oils in your hair are trying to compensate for what is being washed away daily. Thus, when you try to go longer between washings, the oil build up occurs. The good news here, is that the longer you go between washings means that your scalp will adjust and produce less oils over time, because you are no longer washing them away as frequently. The days between washing, you can try wearing your hair up to hide the "greasiness", wear a scarf wrap or a hat. Another trick is to sprinkle baby powder on your scalp. You only need a little. It absorbs the oils and it smells great too! And no worries, the white powder does not show up on brunettes, mind you, you only need about a tablespoon of powder. I see someone else mentioned here about "too much conditioner". This is only a problem when you don't properly rinse all the product from your hair.

There are those that say that you shouldn't wash your hair everyday, but that's only partially true. How often a person washes their hair depends on its oiliness level. If a person has drier or very dry hair then he/she shouldn't wash the hair daily, as that would cause it to become even drier by removing what little oils their scalp produces more frequently. If your hair is oily however, washing it daily isn't a bad thing at all. Often times hair that is oily doesn't look good if not washed daily. In the case of oily hair the scalp produces sufficient oils to keep the hair hydrated and washing it everyday is not only ok, but preferred. There are some answers to this that I have read that stated that hair adapts in oiliness to how often you wash it. That is a myth. If that was the case, African Americans (who have naturally very dry hair) should, according to that theory, have oily hair since they only wash it once a week or two. Hope that helps!

Your hair doesn't really need washing everyday, if you do you tend to strip your hair of natural oils. Its ok to wash it every other day if you have to. There are however some people that need to wash it more regularly, only because their hair produces more oil than others, almost like your own natural conditioner. This makes your hair very greasy, so you would have to wash it more often.
So it seems like your hair is probably really healthy creating its own oils. Just make sure not to use too much conditioner.

When you wash your hair everyday it strips it of all the natural oils and vitamins. I have your same problem in that it gets greasy fast. I usually wash my hair every other day. And another thing you should do is use different shampoos and conditioners switching them often. Each shampoo and conditioner gives your hair different vitamins and things.

There is nothing wrong with washing your hair everyday, if you have oily hair and your hair gets greasy quickly. I wash my hair most everyday. I use very gentle shampoos with lots of conditioners in them and a very good conditioner. (I buy my products from my stylist). If your hair is very oily, then you should have no problems with washing your hair everyday. Concentrate on washing your scalp and the hair closest to your head and don't manipulate the ends much and rinse, rinse, rinse. Apply the conditioner only to the ends and try and steer clear of slopping it all over your head, especially close to the scalp.

Technically washing your hair everyday strips your hair of its natural oils. But I'm like you I wash it every day unless I'm really sick or very late. AIG makes a great conditioner for moisturizing your hair. I use it daily and my hair is so healthy. Talk with your beautician to see what would work great on your type of hair.
If you want to stop washing it everyday it will adjust it just takes time. Unless you have naturally oily hair then it will always be oily.
Good luck.

it depends on how thick your hair is. washing your hair removes some of the natural oils from you hair. if you have thicker hair you can go every other day or a few days. my hair is pretty straight and thin so i have to wash it everyday and sometimes twice a day.

I wash my hair once weekly. I have very dry hair and it helps a lot. If you want to transition to washing it less, you have to let your scalp re-adapt. This basically means let it go for a week - possibly a week in which you're camping or something, or otherwise won't be going out. After a few weeks, you scalp will slow down its oil production.

During re-adapting, you might want to try brushing your hair more often with a soft-bristle brush, to sweep out and redistribute the oils. If it gets really bad, put a little cornstarch in your hair and brush it through. (Yes, really.)

Back before the 1960s, women only washed their hair (or had it done for them at the salon) once weekly. It was advertising to make shampoo companies more $$$ that changed it.

I have the same dilemma, my hair basically stick to my head after day one. I think people who only need to wash their hair every other day or even less frequently have different hair than we do. My Mom said she used to have to wash hers every day too but now every two days, so maybe when we get older we will have to wash less frequently??
