I have attended college and received my B.A. in Communication a few years ago. I think that I would like to go on and continue my education but I am unsure of what discipline.

I have had a few jobs since graduation but have not found a career that I am passionate about. My wife told me a statistic that approx. 80% of college graduates don't work in the field that they studied in.

For those of you out there that have gone on, what made you choose the path that you did? And when did you know you wanted to go back to school?

I always knew I wanted to go back to school, but I needed motivation and opportunity to make it happen. A life changing event in my life when I was in my early 30's gave me the push to make the move and actually start a masters program - I was suddenly a single parent with two little girls to support.

I stayed on the same path - I did a masters in education - because I saw opportunities for advancement and better paying jobs, and I enjoyed my work.

By the way, I am 53 years old and retired and a grandma now, and I still want to go back to school. :)

In almost every field, salary correlates highly with education. Even if your degree is in a different field from your work, more education almost always means more money.

I chose to go to graudate school because I received a come-on in the mail from a school located in an area where I had recently traveled on vacation. I enjoyed the area and thought it would be a nice place to go to school. Their graduate school had an affordable offer, so I took them up on it.
