I don't think dogs are meant to be litter trained. I highly recommend walking your dog, it doesn't take long (believe me, I have my own dog and I go out in the mornings when it is freezing). Plus, they need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, usually it should be outside so they get the fresh air. Good luck!

YES. I have a chihuahua and he's two years old. I got him as a puppy. He was four months and I tried lots of things because it was cold weather I didn't want to take him outside etc. Let me tell you that the best thing in the world for house training is crate training. Some people think it's cruel but it's not. When you get them out of the crate you take them outside to pee. Dogs generally do not want to pee in thier den/bed so they will learn that the outside is their toilet. This is what to do when you're gone. When you're there just take them outside ever couple of hours as a puppy and make sure if you see them circling that you take them outside to pee. I leave my chihuahua out sometimes when i'm gone so that he can run around and play but when i come in he's lying in the crate with the door open. They love the crates. I tried using kitty litter and it worked for a while but just do the crate training, you'll be glad in the long run.

Tip #1: Do NOT paper train.
We bought a puppy for the first time, so I grabbed the free puppy manual to help us along. The vets & trainers who put togather the manual said paper training teaches your dog that it is OK to "go" in the house.
Instead, take your dog outside approximately half an hour after drinking, or a couple hours after eating. Take the puppy to the same place each time so that when you go out he acquaints that area with "waste disposal". (Also, keep an eye on him after eating. If he begins to sniff around, take him outside asap)
Once you are outside, be patient with the puppy since he is learning. Praise him a lot when he urinates or has a bowel movement. Some people give their puppies treats when they go to the bathroom, but that can be a lot of unwanted fat in your puppy's diet.
Also, keep your puppy in a crate at night so he is not tempted to have an accident on the floor. Dogs will not deficate in their personal space.
Good luck to you!

One question...why? Why can you not take the dog outside to do its business? I'm not being mean, but hear me out. My mother-in-law has a Chiuahuah (sp?) and paper trained it rather than taking her outside (she is EXTREMELY LAZY). Therefore, the dog cannot be taken anywhere without peeing and crapping in the person's house. She is not allowed to bring her into my home because of this. Do yourself a favor and train the dog to go outside. Do you want to drag a litter box with you if you visit people and take the dog????

I trained my toy poodle to use the litter box. He caught on quickly at first. But if I moved the litter box, he wanted to go where the litter box had been. He was doing pretty well until we got a cat. I got the cat her own litter box of course, but she took over the dog's as well. Cats instinctively use the litter box, while dogs have to be taught. And they wouldn't share. So, no more litter box for the dog...

Get a carrier and keep him in it until time to go outside. Take him out to play and then put him back inside. Take him outside 6:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 12:00 noon 3:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.
Keep him inside cage all night.
Pick him up and carry him outside. Do not allow him to use carpet. This will get old but he will eventually learn to go outside.
You can shorten to 3 times a day soon. Small dog. Small bladder.

just be consistant and keep up with it . I would highly reccommend puppy pads instead though cause who wants to clean a litter box and the litter hurts chi s small feet . Please use pads instead. we would not want to cause the little guys or girls feet to hurt would we? good luck.oh and the guy on here that said take your dog outside well i would not do that untill it is fully vacinated unless you have a fenced yard and you know no other dog has used the area for it's dumping ground . would not want it to catch something and die .good luck

use a cage when you are not home , take the puppy out at least once an hour when home and offer lots of praise every time it goes outside, and offer a tiny treat when it poops outside, this teaches them that going outside is a good thing!

small dogs are easily wee-wee pad trained... just place he/she on the pee pad each time it attemps to go. Crate training is also effective while you wee-wee pad train. But ALWAYS take the dog (big or small) out for walks everyday (more than once).
