A 'rifle' is a long gun meant to be fired with both hands and typically having a shoulder stock. A 'carbine' was originally a shorter rifle, however in the US it came to mean a short rifle that fired a pistol-type caliber cartridge.

There are two categories of handguns, which are meant to be operated with one hand but typical usage involved the use of a two hand grip:

A revolver has a cylinder that holds multiple cartridges and turns them so that they match up with the firing mechanism and the barrel.

A pistol can be any handgun that is not a revolver, which includes the old black powder pistols as well as modern semi-automatics and even automatic pistols.

A "Mauser" is usually a rifle OR a carbine following the design of Paul Mauser for his rifles, however the Mauser company of Germany has made some outstanding pistols as well.
Mauser rifles have been used or made by most countries in the world and they were the standard military rifle from the 1890s through the early days of WWII. They are also the inspiration for most hunting rifles made today.

a rifle is a long stouted gun with a stock (the wooden part that fires bullets, the ones you most commonly see, a pistol also fires bullets but it is hand held with a magazine that the bullets go into and slides into the handle of the pistol. A revolver holds 6 bullets and rotates as each shot is fired. Mausers are types of rifles too. Normally bolt action meaning after you fire you pull back on bolt near the top of the rifle to reload. There are also lever actions which are below the trigger and you pump after a shot. You have to reload or pump a rifle everytime after a shot, unless is it semi-automatic which is illegal to hunt with. Pistols on the other hand and revolvers, can be loaded by pulling back the hammer after you shoot, or you can just force the trigger to fire again. It is more difficult to fire the second shot because you have to pull harder to rotate the revolver or to pull the bullet up, but it can be done. hope this helps..

Here goes...

Rifle: A firearm made to be fired from the shoulder, with a rifled barrel (rather than a smooth bore barrel) with a length of between 22 and 26 inches.

Pistol: A handgun (made to be shot one-handed rather than from the shoulder) that self-loads from a box magazine (usually in the grip) after each shoot.

Revolver: A handgun (again intended to be shot one-handed rather than from shoulder) that has a cylinder that rotates holding four to six (or more) cartridges in each cylinder hole and fires each time the hammer drops on the loaded cylinder. It can be double-action (shoots merely by squeezing the trigger), or single-action (the hammer has to be pulled back in order to initiate the shooting process) or can be double and single action (as are most modern revolvers). Revolvers are also called: "Wheel-guns, or in the case of the six-shot revolver, "six shooters."

Mauser: A Mauser is an action type for a rifle. It is of German origin and has a bolt that is raised and retracted to expel and load rounds again, usually from a box magazine.

Hope that helped.

"""A pistol can be any handgun that is not a revolver"""

Once more for the freaks in the cheap seats....

A PISTOL is any shortbarreled weapon designed to be fired with one hand. It makes no damned difference if it loads and fires from a magazine or if it has a revolving cylinder. A PISTOL is ANY shortbarreled weapon designed to be fired with one hand.

A flare pistol is a pistol, a crossbow pistol is a pistol, a singleshot brass handcannon is a pistol, a Smith and Wesson 64 revolver is a pistol, a water pistol is a pistol....

A PISTOL is any shortbarreled weapon designed to be fired with one hand.

A pistol that uses a magazine and reloads itself between individual shots is called an "automatic pistol" or a "self-loading pistol".

A pistol that has a revolving cylinder is called a "revolving pistol".

Let's all say it together now.

A PISTOL is any shortbarreled weapon designed to be fired with one hand. It does NOT rely on the type of loading and firing to define it as a "pistol" vs a "revolver".
