Just gathering information for research, some of you may not be comfortable answering, that's ok. :)
e.g. Depression, Anxiety, panic attacks, Bi-polar disorder, Schizophrenia, etc.
1.) What were you diagnosed with?
2.) At what age were you diagnosed? From a young age, teenage years, adulthood?
3.) Do you believe that your symptoms and diagnosis of this disorder could have been brought on by any of the following: relationship problems, hardships, mistreatment or unfortunate events that happened in your life? (If you want you can elaborate.)
4.) Addition to question #3: If these hardships hadn't occured, do you feel that you would never have been diagnosed with this disorder?

Thanks.

1) My diagnosis changed a couple times from anxiety, to depression, to disorganized schizophrenic, to schizo-affective.
2) 16, 24, 28, and 31 or so.
3) Yes, all of the above, but no one in particular more than another.
4) I like the genetics theory, too, and I think that mental disorders are actually just fancy names to help people understand who you are when in general, no one really gets you. I think if science hadn't occurred and we were left in the hands of more community-minded people, I might not have been diagnosed with something that most people still don't really understand.

Hey -

1) Diagnosed with Bipolar 1 disorder
2) Diagnosed at age 21
3) Well, sort-of. I truelly believe that by disorder is a chemical imbalance. But, I think that stress played a roll in triggering the manic episode that first occurred when I got diagnosed.

4) No. Because even though I was under alot of stress, Bipolar is clearly a chemical imbalance and I think it would have gotten diagnosed anyway. (Especially because I have the classic, severe form with extreme manias and depressions)

Good luck with your research!

I'm 23 and was diagnosed with depression at the age of 4. When i was 4 i started self mutilating by shaving all the skin off my knees. I also have been diagnosed with panik attacks, ocd and sever depression it got worse as i got older. My whole family is bipolar and depressed it's really genetics i think cause we used to be really good off finacially and i was still depressed. Now we have lost that all and i am even worse regardless i'll always have these mental health issues.
