Fishing is considered a peaceful sport, is this because fish dont make any noise when they are in pain? So, if a fish did make agonising sounds while it had a hook impailed into its lip, would it change the world of fishing?

Just curious.

A scientific study was once done to determine if fish experienced pain. Since the fish had no reaction to pain stimuli, it was surmised that fish lack pain receptors and therefore "feel" no pain. This study was done when catch and release started to get popular and people were concerned that the fish that were being caught were hurt. Of course, it speaks volumes that the same fish can be caught time and time again. Most any animal that experiences pain "learns" to avoid it in the future. Just like a dog that pees on the floor and gets a whack with a newspaper. The dog quickly "learns" not to pee on the floor to avoid being whacked again.

Fish obviously have a mouth and a jaw, but I have never seen nor heard of one having lips. Some fish such as catfish and croakers do make a squeaking, groaning like sound when caught or handled. This is a warning alert to the other fish of impending danger. Not an utterance of agony.

It's good that you are concerned about the well-being of our water borne friends.

Stay curious!

Mammals utter sounds when in pain and hunting still exists. The object of the activity must be considered. Is the purpose the acquisition of food, acquisition of a "trophy" or the intrepid, game preserve version of hunting?

Catch and release is common in the sport of fishing. There was a television show, "Fishing Michigan", with Rick Collar, where "catch and release" was used, predominantly.

Some ocean fish make croaking noises when they are stressed/threatened, but I guess that doesn't qualify as a scream.
