Its not the stuff in the absinthe its the idiocy in the government. There is nothing detrimental to your health, besides the alcohol, in true absinthe. Many low quality absinthe's were made with low quality ingredients and contained dangerous metals.
Today it's known absinthe doesn't cause hallucinations. Many of the hallucinogenic effects and their "studies" are now under criticism, most users of the day were also smoking opium and taking the popular opiate rich health remedies of the day. Some EU countries are waking up and re-legalizing absinthe.

Just like marijuana the government keeps absinthe banned even though there is no real substance for it.

Absinthe uses wormwood to gather flavor, which also contains a hallucinogen. True absinthe is illegal most everywhere these days, and the "imitation" isn't worth the burning or flavor.
