DO NOT JOIN. Please, do not. You just admitted you would only be joining for the benefits. That is not a good reason to join if you disagree with what you are fighting for. How will you feel when you are over seas for 12-18 months? Seriously consider that. If that idea doesn't bother you then maybe you should join. You will have a job to do and you will do it, whether you are in the National Guard or Active Army.

First off, if you have major issues with the war in Iraq, or are joining simply for the benefits, do not join. Even in the National Guard, you will still most likely be deployed at least once in your first (generally 6 year) enlistment. The MOS (job) that you chose will have a direct effect on probability of deployment, and likeliness of contact while deployed. The benefits are great, with bonuses, financial aid, and life insurance, but it needs to be more then that. It is a great way to better yourself, gain experience and become more professional. It can drastically help in your civilian career path, especially if you want to go into a civil service fild (cop, firefighter etc). You'll also make friends to last a lifetime. The best thing you can do for yourself is research it extensively before you make a decision. Good luck!

If all you are worrying about is going to Iraq then stop. Yes there is a war going on but the media makes it out to be much more than it is. I am not saying that you need to dismiss the danger but Soldiers keep on enlisting and the ones that are in keep enlisting too despite their many tours to the Desert and the Army finally made quota this year. Guess the Benny's are good enough

my suggestion is when you first join think that you will be deployed because you will most likely will be deployed. Then consider what MOS you want, pick something you like. i dont suggest joining and thinking your not going to Iraq so if you really dont agree with the war its best not to join.
