I am subleasing from my brother who had lived there 4 years before me. He never had cleaned or vacumed ONCE. Anyways i have spent alot of time cleaning..but the carpets are damaged and stained. The walls are chipped. Appliances are rusted. I want my house to look homey and fresh. I need ideas. I dont want to sink alot of $$$ cause i rent not own. The worst is the carpets and landlords WILL NOT replace or clean carpeting. Please help me...my home is so depressing...Thank You!!!

pull up a corner of the old carpet, you might be suprised, you may have beautiful hardwood floors underneath if so, then just polish them up and add area rugs. Paint is cheap and even cheaper if you go to lowes or other paint store and ask if they have any mistints these are paint that did not match the customers request and they sell them for practically nothing. Fabric is cheap make some window treatment and also hit some yard sales for some great finds for just pennies.

Well I'm assuming that once you move out the landlords would change out the carpet you have now anyway, so why not just rip it up & paint or seal the concrete, then get a few cheap rugs - this should be easier to clean sand anyway living on the beach. Put a coat of paint on the walls - or what I did when I was living in apartments was get huge canvases from the local craft store & paint those & hang up - even if it's just big blocks of color. Not much you can do about the appliances. Ask at home depot or lowes, they do make appliance paint, so maybe you could touch up the rusted spots.

One thing you could do about the carpet is to go on the internet and request carpet samples from flooring manufactures. Some manufactures actually have 16" X 16" carpet tiles. I used four different samples within the same color family as an accent rug which ended up measuring about 2'-8" X 2'-8" Decent size rug especially when it was free!

Well, if you want to replace the carpet, you'll have to be willing to eat the cost. Even at its cheapest, carpeting is going to cost a few hundred dollars. But, I found brand new carpet at Home Depot a few years ago for only about $1/sq ft. That's cheap. They also have roll ends that you might find suffice. You can also try big area rugs to tastefully put in certain areas. They aren't cheap either though.... As far as various decorating ideas, try watching HGTV. Really. They have great ideas for doing things homemade inexpensive.

check with the local building code inspection office, you may be able to make the landlord replace them if they can be deemed a health hazard..or buy some large cheap rugs and put on top of carpet... the wall chips are cheap and easy to fix... if it is drywall...use joint compound [from the hardware or walmart]...spead a thin layer over gouge marks and repaint...the appliances can also be painted but be careful of the landlord claiiming damage when YOU move out... ask first.... and sand off rust and use specail appliance paint. also it is not that expensive to rent a carpet cleaner if you haven't already..not hard to use either..

area rugs over wall to wall carpeting is very warm and cozy, and common....appliance painting is possible...paint is cheap...25.00 gallon....fill in wall chips with spackle...and most of all fill your home with things you love and that will take the focus off the other issues...new focus paint the cieling something other than white....lighting definately invest in lighting
