I am going into army basic at Benning in a month and I really suck at running. I can run one mile in 8:15 sec but I feel like collapsing after that. I plan to maybe work my way up to two miles by the time I go in and I am running everyday. My question is, are they going to make me run 5 miles right away when I get in? How much will they make me do? Please ONLY qualified people answer and no people who went to basic 50 years ago lol. Thanks :)

You start with a mile run, then they can gauge your level. They will put you in ability groups, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta. They will start you off slow, unless your Alpha or Bravo, and work you up to the 5 mile run day, which is rare, but does happen. I started in Charlie and ended in Alpha. Basic will prepare you and make you a good runner.

When you first get to Basic, you will be in "reception" for about a week. This is a staging and processing point that is not considered part of Basic. Once you are deemed qualified medically and administratively, you will have to pass a simple physical test to proceed to Basic. This requires running one mile in ten minutes or less. Almost every person, regardless of what type of training they did before shipping, can complete this. From there you begin Basic, where you have Drill Sergeants that run you every other day to build up your tolerance. By the end of those 9 weeks, you'll need to be able to run 2 miles in under about 16 minutes (depending on age). The longest run we ever did in Basic was just over 5 miles, but that was not a common occurance. The Drill Sergeants are there to make sure you suceed (regardless of what they tell you) and if you fail, they fail. Don't worry- you'll be running no problem. And throwing up afterward!!

First I did not go to Basic Training 50 Years ago. I am a recent vet. Fort Benning, GA is sorta a nice place. I went there for Infantry training. My MOS was 11M30 - Mechanized Infantry - E6. Anyways, Drill Instructors are trained to train you...and everyone else. You will most likely run 2 miles a day, as you train longer you will run longer, march longer, and be sleep deprieived longer. My suggestion is to continue training and run. I had a Drill Instructor tell me that if I am not throwing up after I ran, I did not run hard enough. Keep that in mind, you will be put to the test. Remember this "BOHICA". You will understand in about a month.

As I recall, at Ft Benning you get to do a "three" mile run. three miles out of camp, three miles up the mountain, three miles down the mountain, three miles back to camp.

Good Luck.

They will get you into shape, you will probably be running every other day when in. By the time you test on your run you should be in good enough shape to complete it. Just push your self during PT and your be fine when its all over.
