How to translate 'mer d’huile' into English?

Not a sea of oil, nor an oliy sea - anyone any ideas?

If you don't need for the correct translation (that you've already quoted in yr question) then I can offer you this alternative.
When the sea is particularly quiet and flat people say
"c'est aussi calme que l'huile" and then you can translate
"calm sea"

It means perfectly/utterly calm.

It does apparently mean "totally quiet/calm"... Hope this helps!
