This is what it said for my Camry: It had found 20 records

These 20 records may indicate whether this vehicle has been:

Salvaged or stolen
Flood or hail damaged
In a fire or accident
Declared a lemon
Had an odometer rollback
Used as a rental or taxi

I am checking out a 4runner right now with 24 records (has a rebuilt title). I thought this VIN was bad on the 4runner and was not going to purchase it, but my Camry is 20 records and runs like a charm. What do you think? Buy or not?

Yes, it's a good price 3995.00 the salesman was honest with me and told me it had been in an accident and rebuilt. I have bought about 3 vehicles from this dealer and have had great cars.

The car has a rebuilt title, so expect to see "salvage" on it. That is pretty serious, so you better check into what exactly happened to the car from the owner. Of all things to happen to a car, you don't want one that came from a flood. If you are still serious about getting a salvaged vehicle, I would definately check the records.
Don't forget to include a good reduction in price for the car because of the salvage title and for repairs, depending on what happened to it.

WAIT! This doesn't say what you think it says.

It simply indicates that there are 20 records for this car.
The records MAY indicate whether this vehicle has been... etc.

You have to buy the records to find out if they indicate those things. The records could simply indicate that the car has been bought and sold.

When the owner buys the car from a dealership a record is created.
When the owner sells the now used car to a dealership and transfers the title. A record is created.
When another buyer buys that used car from a dealership, a record is created.
If a guy gives the car to his son and transfers the title, a record is created.

You don't know what the records indicate until you pay for them.

If you're looking to buy the car from a dealership, make the dealer pay for the CarFax report before you buy the vehicle!

I used to rebuild wrecks, and I wouldn't buy a car with a "rebuilt" title. There are too many people out there who will skimp on the work just to make a little more money.

As for the Camry having 20 entries, each time the tag is renewed (yearly) and each time it goes to the smog check (yearly) it gets an entry. I looked at a one owner, two year old Volvo that had 11 entries because it had been passed around between dealers and auctions. If you don't actually order the report, you won't know what kind of entries there are for the vehicle.

The records you got are just generic reports that may or may not refer to your vehicle. They want you to pay them for a full report that applies to your vehicle.
Everyone that gets the "FREE" report gets that same report.

You need to get the actual records. The number of records is meaningless!

If it runs good with no major problems and you don't plan on reselling it, buy it. If not, walk. A salvage title will lower the value considerably.
