I used to buy the puppy training pads and they were getting costly so I switched to newspaper. The newspaper does not absorb and the pee ends up staying in a puddle then rolling onto the carpet. I am not sure what I can do to resolve this problem.

Depending on the age of the puppy, why not take him outdoors? If you take him to the very same spot every time and tell him/her to "Go Potty" or what ever word you'll be using, you'll soon not have to worry about him/her urinating indoors. Be consistent and patience. Good Luck.

If you have a very small dog you may have a problem , small dogs are harder to house break than larger breeds. If you don't take your pooch outside every two hours then he's going to pee on your carpet. Crate training is effective and dogs actually like having a crate to snuggle up in. You need a crate that isn't large enough for the dog to go on the other side and eliminate because he needs to be uncomfortable if he goes. Don't use the crate as a disciplinary tool because then the puppy won't like his crate, you want him to like it. keep the door open on the crate when you are home giving the dog his choice to go in or out and remember to take him out every two hours until he's a little older.( Older dogs can hold their bladder longer) When you go to bed put your dog to bed close the crate door and first thing in the morning pick up the puppy and take him outside to go. Then scratch him on the head and tell him he's a good dog. Look up more info on crate training , I used this method and it works well. Former Animal Nurse------ with dog training experience.

You are supposed to train the dog to pee outside, not on the papers. Papers on the floor are just there initially when the pup is very small and before you train it. You should be able to have a pup housebroken by 12 weeks and then there is no longer a need for papers.

Using puppy pads and newspaper is actually delaying your housebreaking process. It is teaching him that it is okay to go in the house, when it is not. Use the crate training method, as a dog will not potty where it has to sleep.

What I did with my pup during her housebreaking was to just put *alot* of paper. I would put *at least* 6-10 sheets and that helped minimize the puddling. What really helped was that my neighbors would get the daily paper so after they were done, they'd give us the batch so we always had plenty of paper on hand. Oh and one last thing, lots and lots of patience. Just keep training your pup and it'll eventually get it. It only took my first dog a few scoldings after going in the house but it's taken my current pup a few months to get a grasp. So try not to get frustrated :)

Yea, you need to get on with the training thing. If you teach too long that going on the paper is where to go then he'll just learn to do that... he needs to learn where the door is and that when he needs to go... he needs to go to the door and let you know. Gotta move on that.

In the mean time.... throw a bit of kitty litter down on the newspaper. It's absorbant.

I bought incontinence pads from a medical store. They are for people with bladder problems to use in beds, chairs etc.

They are quite cheap, approx 10.00 - 15.00 ea, VERY absorbent, and completely reusable! I have 3 of them and just throw the used one in the wash and put out a new one! Way more convenient than pet pads as you never run out, much cheaper, and works WAY better than news paper!

Put tarpalin (big plastic sheet) on the floor and newspaper over it, make sure you wash the tarpaulin often and empty it outside or in the toilet.
You can probably get it from DIY/hardware shops or maybe use an old camping groundsheet?
Good Luck!!

try putting a litter pan underneath the newspaper. It will keep the urine in a confined area and it won't get onto any of your carpets! I have five dogs so I know how that is. Good luck!

Never, never train a dog to use the house if you can avoid it. If you must and its a small dog try this-get a large cat litter pan. I would use the sand clumping litter-unscented. Remove any solid waste daily, completely change over the litter every week, maybe 2.
