Hey guys,

Looking to get a vertical sternum piercing. I know about the high rate of rejection and what not. Just wondering if anyone had one and what people think of them

My friend has one and it looks absolutly stunning...especially is u have a nice rack....sorry but its true! Research your piercer first. They should have experience in this type of piercing including pictures. A surface bar should be used. It is staple shaped. It reduces the chance of rejection, because there is less pressure. There is ALWAYS going to be a chance of rejection tho, so be aware of what signs to look for so u can take it out instead of being left with a nasty scar. My nap started to reject, so I had to remove it. I miss it terribly. My friends has had her sternum for about a year now with no problems. U should have an initial fitting in which your piercer will decide the size of the jewelry and the placement of the piercing. Then after your jewelry is ordered, u will come back for the piercing. It SHOULD have to be ordered as to fit YOU. Speaking from experience of a surface piercing (nape tho)....it is an AMAZING feeling. Wash it regularly with orange dial, and hold a dixie cup of seasalt water over it a few time daily until it heals. Good luck! Happy poking!

There is ALWAYS the risk for rejection. But depending on the upkeep, the piercer and your own body you can maintain the piercing for a while. Usually it keeps for a year or longer when done correctly

No promises should be made by the piercer however because they might be skilled but cannot predict how your body will behave. That said, you will want to search for a piercer who was trained to use the right methods and jewelry for surface piercings. They should have pictures of the piercings and ones that have been successful.

Having tried other surface piercings, I think its not worth the scarring, money and pain. They are sexy, I'll admit that but not something I venture into anymore. If you do get it, I wish you luck and hope you enjoy it while it lasts.

I have a vertical sternum piercing, and have done for about 5 or 6 years, I have only in the last year had it redone as it had grown out a bit and was getting annoying, but to solve that I also could have just put in a smaller bar. I think they are wonderful! And I have only ever had positive comments from other people about it. Get it done, keep it clean and you should be fine.

I've been wanting one for years, but then moved on to tattoos and that has become my new love. :)

As for the rejection rate, I recommend going by your own body. Everybody is different and their rates will be different. I never had my navel or eyebrow move at all. If you've never had a surface piercing before, I'd ask your piercer for their opinion. They'll be able to better gauge after feeling your skin. It'll also make a difference as to how thick your skin is and how deep the piercer goes.

I had one for a few months and loved it. The ball came off one end in the shower and the bar slipped down - in no more then 30 secconds the top opening had closed over 0.o

I'm planing to get it re done in a few weeks though.

Couldn't even feel it was there after getting it done.
