“Ten Commandments” is not found in the Bible. Instead, it speaks of them as the “Ten Words.” (Ex. 34:28; Deut. 4:13; 10:4) In the Septuagint version they are termed the déka, meaning “ten,” and lógoi, meaning “words,” from which we get the name Decalogue for the Ten Commandments. Fittingly there are ten of them, a symbol of completeness. And from the rest of the Scriptures we learn that Jehovah God used angels to transmit them through Moses to the sons of Israel and that it was “God’s finger” that wrote these ten commandments on two tablets of stone.—Acts 7:53; Gal. 3:19; Ex. 31:18.

The Great Commandments
Jesus was asked by a lawyer which of the Ten Commandments were the greatest. His response: "Matt.22:36-40: Master, which is the great commandment in the law? (37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

It's the laws of the Old Testament that most Christians no longer follow although Jesus (peace be upon him) has explicitly made it clear that the 10 Commandments must be observed. Jesus himself said:
"Do not think that I [Jesus] have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (the Old Testament) until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-18)"
Christians always say as an excuse that an Old Testament law does not apply to them. According to Matthew 5:17-18, we clearly see that Jesus honored the Old Testament, and forced Christians to follow the unmodified laws of it that have not been replaced by newer ones in the New Testament.
God knows best

The Ten Commandments were clarified by the Commandment that The Lord gave us before His Ascention : 'Love others as you love yourself'.
The depth of this goes as far as we are willing to delve within.
Us humans are very good at being selfish, ignorant , irresponsilble, corrupt, greedy and destructive.
This Commnadment covers all aspects if we are to 'expect' respect and help and love from others.
Ther are many out there that have gone too far the wrong way, that was up to them.
But there is A Way, and it is to follow from your within in truth, light and love, spiritually, if we are truly to progress.
Peace

Ancient superstitious myths that Moses supposedly promoted as "laws from god." They were actually rules for trying to make the wandering hebrews live together more harmoniously -- saying they were "from god" just gave them more importance in people's minds.
They are:
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me
(implies that there *are* other gods, just none that are more important to hebrews than Jehovah!)
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. (don't make any "gods" out of wood, rock, stone, etc.)
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the lord thy god in vain (oh, god, what a silly commandment!)
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy (NO christians observe this -- "sabbath" is Saturday, and there are a ton of rules that have to be observed to "keep it holy" -- christians don't do any of them).
5. Honor thy father and they mother (ok, fine -- common sense).
6. Thou shalt not kill (some folks these days change this to "not murder," but that's not what the original meaning is. They do so in order to justify executions and fighting in wars, where they say it's OK to kill. That's not what was intended here, it says not to kill period!)
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery (remember, adultery is sex between two married people but not with their spouses -- sex *before* marriage is "fornication," which is not prohibited here!)
8. Thou shalt not steal (tell that to the politicians...)
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against they neighbor (lying is bad, but if it's not your neighbor I guess it's ok!)
10. Thou shalt not covet...anything that is they neighbor's (including his a$s -- which is a donkey)
Note that in the new testament, jesus proclaimed that HE was the way, not the mosaic law -- that he fulfilled the mosaic law. Which basically renders the ten commandments obsolete. And yet...christians fight to put them on the steps of courthouses. How silly. They don't even understand their own religion :(

Supposedly given to Moses by god, but actually plagarized from the Egyptian Book of the Dead (since god does not exist). Since the Jews wanted to worship just one god, four of the ten commandments has to do with just that subject. The rest come from the Egyptians.

Commandments given to the Hebrews in a covenant made with God.
It was not given to the gentiles., Believers are under a much higher level as Jesus showed on the sermon on the mount.
i.e : you have heard of old times an eye for an eye....but I say unto you, love your enemies...
It is the law of love, a much higher law.

(Exo.20:3-17
3 "You shall have no other gods before me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
6 but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.
11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
13 "You shall not murder.
14 "You shall not commit adultery.
15 "You shall not steal.
16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." )
