Why the name Mounted Police, do all officers operate on Horseback or Trained on Horseback?
Has this way of Policing been disbanded, Or the Policing the country on foot patrols, Vehicle, and other ways of modern Policing?

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (aka The RCMP) are the primary police force for Canada..however, there are a couple of provinces that have their own police force and do not use much of the RCMP (Ontario is the first province that comes to mind in this respect-they have the OPP>Ontario Provincial Police). Most provinces use the RCMP and also have smaller police forces of their own as well (ie; the larger major cities also have their own police forces) Does this help answer your question? Hope so! From a Canuck (aka Canadian)

The RCMP or Royal Canadian Mounted Police are the official Police Force for the Country and primarily work in the smaller communities that cannot afford to have their own Police Force.
Most Major Cites have Municipal Police Forces that work in conjuction with the RCMP.
The RCMP are the Main Government Police Service.

First of all , they are the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (Very important to them that we get the name right. )
They used to be mounted in function as well as name in order to police the frontier but except for the Show team (Musical Ride) they are foot/car depolyed like all other forces.
The RCMP function in a number of roles.
First, they act as the National Police force for cross-provincial major crimes similar to the FBI.
Until a few years ago, they also acted as Canadian Intelligence. This was taken over by CSIS.
In Provinces/Territories that do not have a Provincial Police Force ( Which is all except Ontarion and Quebec), They also act as the provincial Police force (think State Troopers)
In towns that do not have municipal police forces in provinces other than Ontario and Quebec, they may act as the regional/city police. Like in Dog River.
They also are the guards for federal institutions and embassys.
Can't forget the musical ride and that they single handedly cleaned up Chicago on Due South.

The RCMP is not a branch of a larger police force but a national police force that fills several roles. These include policing (generally in rural areas where a municipal or provincial police force is not in place), international peacekeeping and training, national security and intelligence.
From their website:
"The RCMP is unique in the world since it is a national, federal, provincial and municipal policing body. We provide a total federal policing service to all Canadians and policing services under contract to the three territories, eight provinces (except Ontario and Quebec), more than 200 municipalities, 165 Aboriginal communities, three international airports and numerous smaller airports."
