Wise is your Mum.
If as I suspect, you are relatively young, there is at least a 50% chance he will read things into your actions that you may or may not agree with. Could lead to a very uncomfortable situation.
Even if common sense is old fashioned and outmoded, stick with it for your own sake. Best route would be to find out what he's up to through mutual friends. That way you can perhaps arrange an "accidental" contact, and see where it goes from there.
Who knows? He may be a procurer for the Saudi slave-trade now. A lot can happen in two years.

Some people believe that a girl should not ask a guy out because it is too forward. Or they might have more of a traditional view.
However, if you think this guy is the type who like confident girls then you should ask him out. If you know he is the type to ask out a girl he likes. Then you should just ask him to hang out. Not necessarily ask him out on a date.
However, those are just opinions. Feel free if you have more questions.

Take it from someone who's probably been around as long as your mom has. Never ask a guy out. Why?
Because guys are lazy. They don't do anything they don't want to do. Ever notice that? So if they want you, they'll come after you. And if you offer it up on a plate to them, they'll abuse it.
ALWAYS let the man chase you, even a little. Trust me (and your mom).

They say that because they are old-fashioned and they think that women have to be subordinate to men. I think you should ask him and have a fun time. What is the worse think that could happen? He might say no, but you don't go to the same school anyways. YOu're young so take a shot and have fun.(just not too much fun ;-)

What is the worst he can say? No right ? so what harm is it. I asked my husband out 20 years ago when it was definitely not the norm and we are still married. So I would say go for it.

Some people are sheeple. Cowards, hiding behind convention. I don't think I'd get along well with your mom. If you are old enough to date, you are old enough to do what's comfortable for yourself. So decide, and then do it. Best of luck.
