I am chemically sensitive, and I am allergic to aspartame. There are people who cannot eat it without consequences... I'll leave it that it makes my digestive system go into overdrive to ... er... expel the substance quickly by whatever means necessary. It is a pretty consistant reaction, it happens when I don't know that something had aspertame in it (until later - who knew Pepto, Listerine Breath Strips, etc had fake sugar in it?), and has happened every time that I have had it. Yes, I do personally feel side effects from this sugar substitute (and others). I do think that a lot of the side effects reported ARE scare tactics, though.

I'm allergic to it. The dyes in Tide detergent makes me break out in hives. Other people are allergic to nuts, some eggs, wheat glutein, strawberries, shellfish, bee stings, pollen, mold spores, dogs, cats, rats, bats, and what have you. Will aspartame cause cancer? Maybe... but so will most things. Even sugar can cause obesity, which can cause some cancers. Does anyone really know what is in High Fructose Corn Syrup? Yellow Number 5? Half the ingredients in a Twinkie?

If you can eat Aspartame, and not have any adverse reaction to it... I wouldn't worry about it. Your digestive system can probably flush out most of the toxins that would be produced. If your stomach starts cramping and you start, well, expelling the contents of your digestive tract, then don't eat or drink it anymore.

As far as I can tell, it's a scare tactic.

I have been using aspartame in my coffee every day for probably ten years. No side effects whatsover, except losing weight.
