HDMI delivers digital video and audio to a TV or receiver. It's the best connection you can use for a video source. It's replacing the old digital standard of DVI because HDMI is smaller, delivers audio and can go longer distances. HDMI can support beyond 1080p video, compared to component, which is limited to 1080i.

If you play video games then go with the HDMI so you can play video games at 1080p but if you're going to use it only for movies then there's not really a big difference between 1080i ( interlace ) or 1080p ( progressive ) so a composite cable will do the job.

HDMI cables also prevent you from watching pirated movies on your tv....if your dvd player is connected to your tv via hdmi it will not play pirated discs. it would be next to impossible to tell a difference between hdmi and dvi unless you have a top of the line tv. if your tv is average, it would be like getting leather seats in a yugo.

It sends video & audio from one component to another. Example, hooking up a cable HD-receiver to a HDTV will give you HD picture quality plus audio. Picture resolution depends on your TV.
