Heres the deal. I want to get my tongue pierced on monday. The following day I am going on a 9 day long snowboarding trip to colorado with my school. This means that I will have to eat the food that i am given on the trip. I know that soup will be available for dinner, will this be ok for me to eat? The bus journey is also 16 hours long, and am wondering, what food could I bring with me to eat during the trip? Because i will get hungry at one point for sure.
I also have a question about kissing? How long after getting it pierced will i not be able to do (open mouth) kissing!!?
How long will the swelling last and how many days will I have to go without eating solid foods and whatever I want?
And last question, is it possible to get a barbell that is suitable for the use on new piercings but that has clear balls, or whatever, that make it less obvious?
I know, a lot of questions, but answers to just one of them would be of great help! Thank you!

Snowboarding + potential falling and accidents + new piercing = not the smartest idea I've heard of.
I suggest that you wait on the piercing. Sure eating food will be a pain, you won't be able to talk well for days, you'll be sore and swollen. Why would you want to spend most of that trip dealing with the care of a piercing instead of just relaxing and having fun?
Swelling generally lasts 4-14 days, during that time, eating can be difficult but as far as eating solid foods again, that will vary from person to person. Kissing should be avoided until swelling goes down and there is no pain or soreness in your tongue. No, you probably can't get clear balls because they are plastic and will harvest bacteria and increase risk for infection and other complications. If you want it less noticeable, you shouldn't get the piercing. Typically the only foods you want to avoid are spicy foods, foods high is acidity (citrus juice, vinegar) and you will want to avoid foods that can get stuck around the barbell making it hard to eat/swallow (some people complain that spaghetti gets suck on the barbell and makes them gag a little, same goes for melted cheese)
Oh, and make sure you always rinse your mouth after eating, drinking or smoking. Be sure to use an alcohol and saccharin free mouthwash like Biotene. It won't burn like conventional mouthwashes and because of that, swelling will go down faster. You will also want to start brushing twice daily if you don't already.
If you ask me...that's a lot to put up with while on a trip...Just wait. You and your body will be better off and safer.

I would wait until after your trip. I had mine pierced right before a physical outing, and it feels lousy. Just wait, you don't want to risk spoiling your trip. But if you're going to do it anyway, here's your answers:
Soup is fine. Noodles that are long will wrap around the piercing and you'll have to unwrap them. Bring Jello and those soups by Campbells that are made to drink while driving. Pudding, anything you don't really have to chew. You will strat to get gradually better as your trip goes by, and you will probably be able to eat easier things by the end of the trip. You can kiss whenever you want, it will just be sore. Use listerine afterwards. The piercer will tell u listerine is to be used after EVERYTHING- eating, drinking, kissing, smoking, etc.Swelling depends on how much you play with it - try not to! You can try eating whatever you want whenever... it's just all about how much it hurts. They pierce with barbells, not the clear plastic stuff. The bars are long b/c of swelling. You have to have it in for a while before switching, so it will be noticeable even with clear balls.

Well it takes about 5 days for the swelling to go down, during that time you will be talking funny. The only things that you should eat are soft stuff thats easy to swallow... maybe you can take some soft fruit of something smashed to eat along the way. Just make sure that after you eat every single time you brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with listerine at least for the first month. No open mouth kissing for about a month. After about a week you can eat solid food. And you have to keep the metal barrel and balls that you get when they pierce it for at least 2 weeks then you can change it to plastic. Well hope this helped..

You will be packin around listerine the whole trip. Food will not be a problem to most ppl, it is a little awkward. I like to compare it to getting a tooth pulled or something, you dont want to eat but you have to. I enjoyed soup and popsicles...the usual "im sick" food.
With mine it took about 2 weeks for me to be fully comfortable with it, but everyone is different and have different healing times.
The barbell you choose is totally up to what your piercer has in stock. So pick one out that you like and that you think isn't noticable. I just prefer the metal ones, but make sure you arn't illergic to any of them.

Do you WANT to take the good chance of being sent home early from the trip for medical problems? That would really be embarrassing, and you might have to live with a crappy nickname or rep for the rest of your time at that school.
Wait till you get back to do it. That adds some mystique to you, and lets you look like a person who has their stuff together. Best of luck.

well my advice... when you go to get it done you can ask all these things to the piercer. but i have had mine done for years... i ate a bagel the same day i got it done. depends on your own healing time in general too i suppose. they wont pierce it with clear balls unless of course you get it done somewhere ghetto. you shouldnt wear a barbell with plastic balls for a long period of time. but if you have all these questions, you should go there ahead of time and ask them before getting it done. good luck.
