I have a friend who has 2 Kelpies and when he puts their flea medicine on them, the drops, the one dog gets really upset with him and ignores him for about a day, laying around sulking. Is this because the dog feels less dominant?

have you ever been bitten by a flea? well imagine being bitten all day long by over 100 fleas. you scratch and make your skin raw. now imagine getting a flea treatment. its going to burn like hell. their skin is raw, and irritated from having those fleas bite and sucking their blood for who knows how long. that's why they seem really irritated and angry afterwards. he doesn't understand that your friend was just trying to get rid of the fleas, so he thinks he was hurting him. dogs don't have reasoning like humans, so they don't understand things like that.

Maybe it's the way that they are treated during the application! Make sure your friend stays calm, and maybe help him hold them still without hurting them.

I doubt this is a dominant behavior. I also have never had issues with a dog doing this.

It may even benefit him to try a different brand. Maybe what he uses has a very strong odor that the dogs are sensitive to.

My dog reacted that way the first time I applied Advantix K9 on her. She scratched herself at the spot where I applied the medicine, then she licked her paws. Her behavior was very disturbing afterwards. Last week when I applied it to her again I gave her a treat while I was applying it and then I put a doggie clothing on her, so she couldn't get at the spot with her paw. She behaved as if I didn't apply the medicine at all this time.

no the reason is that the medicine leaves a wet spot near their neck which is very irritating and it makes their skin itchy on that spot and of course it is very hard for them to reach the itch... so they react by sulking and lying around

no, I think he is just sulking! I don't have the problem with my cocker spaniels, but they are a different breed admittedly
