It all depends on the Recruiter........Most recruiters are generally honest but beware there are some that will say anything to get you to join. I am are recruiter myself. I tell them the Pros and Cons like you mentioned before and I also tell them that the Military is not for everyone. My boss hates me to say that but in the long run the applicants will respect you for it.

The most interesting thing is that, according to the United States Census, recruits from the richest 1/3 of the population (based on census analysis of the zip codes of where the recruits live) far outnumber those from the poorest 1/3 of the population (again, based on census data).

I'll bet you won't hear that on CNN or read it in the NY Times.

I think it depends on the recruiter. I had a friend who went into the Navy and he said he went cause the recruiter told him that he would get taller in basic training.
Given the situation in Iraq I would just love to hear some of the things they are telling kids now that enlistment is an all time low!

Schools in the United States are required by law to provide all available records on students to the military on demand (No Child Left Behind Act), unless the parents opt out. The recruiters who visit schools are usually salesmen, painting rosy pictures of military life and great careers that come from it. I've never heard of one who showed photos or videos of dead and maimed soldiers -- bad PR, I guess.

They tell you about the pros and cons...with a focus on the pros of course. They usually try to bring a recent graduate with them to talk about how much they love it and to be a familiar face.

That the rich are anointed by God. In order to get in good with God, we must die when the rich ask us to. We will go straight to Heaven.

it's all about sales... which is sad. We have to "sell" government service to the people.
