...It seems like many begin simple ("Love God") and then become complicated ("and read this book, and believe he did this, and deny that")....
Are there any religions that are basic in their belief system?

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith.

THOU shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

I could make one based on the Noahide Laws and interestingly everybody but Jews could follow it.

There are only 7 of the commandments:

"The seven laws listed by the Talmud are:

Idolatry - You shall not make for yourself an idol.
Murder - You shall not murder.
Theft - You shall not steal.
Sexual Promiscuity - You shall not commit adultery.
Blasphemy - You shall not blasphemise.
Cruelty to Animals - Do not eat the flesh of a living animal.
Government - You shall set up an effective government to police the preceding six laws."

Two most problematic depending on your beliefs are no idols and no blasphemy. If you don't need an idol, and most don't, and don't feel the need to attack other religions, it's pretty simple. The only law that might cause some other issue is the last one about setting up a government that follows this "religion."

It might work.

Also I'd throw in no lying, but that may be complicating things.

Some could argue that the simplest religion is the Hare Krishna movement. There are no hard and fast rules. Simply chant the Maha Mantra - Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare - all the time, and the soul will gradually become purified. Of course, one could also study the vedas, perform the sacrifices and rituals, change their dress, etc. But it is not required. Almost all religions share the same basic belief system. The regulations not to kill, steal, lie, etc, and the exchange of love between the maker and the self being the ultimate goal.

so far as I can tell they're all like that. start simple and evolve into complications and laws to abide once you've got your feet in.

Buddhism is very simple and not all consuming.

Keep a basic "faith" and live a good life. Nothing more simple than that. It's a journey you take on your own. My best to you on your search.

God of the holy Quran said to worship Him and Him alone and follow Hid messenger (peace be upon him). This is the simple basis of Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said that he was sent with an easy truth, i.e. Islamic monotheism.

Peace and Love.

Religion is the problem.... Religion! Not spirituality..... Love God is that simple....and if you love someone, you want to make them happy and knowing that God loves you, know he wants to make you happy. Once you accept Jesus into your heart, you will begin to see what love is and how to express it.. Not to say that it will be easy to do that. There will be sacrifice. But is is that simple.

Animism

All you gotta do is believe that every single person, place or thing has a spirit and treat it with respect. An occasional prayer for the wellbeing of all the spirits is nice but not necessary.

One that follows the Bible......“This is what the love of God means, that we observe his commandments; and yet his commandments are not burdensome.”—1 JOHN 5:3.

It is important that we read the Bible and apply it in our life. It is there for us. “All the things that were written aforetime were written for our instruction, that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Rom. 15:4) Jehovah loves us and wants what is best for us.

If you do this, then you know you have found the Right religion, the TRUE religion.

I haven't found one. And believe me I'm looking. I don't think "religion" is necessary to be spiritual and in tune with your positive conscience. That's it. That would be the simplest to me. Maybe I should start that.

shree krishna even says: "give up all kinds of religion and just hold on me. don´t be afraid of doing so."(bhagavad-gita 18.66) this means in short terms something like "**** the system, be simple"
