Two options, and the first one you probably won't like. But since it's been there that long that its been thoroughly worked into the fibers, you will probably have to trim it out with scissors.
The second is to get a chemical called Goof-Off (Wal*Mart, Home Depot, etc). Soak a cloth with the chemical and then rub at the gum. It will take a LOOOONNNGGG time to dissolve the gum, but it might work without having to cut the fibers. You should test a spot for color fastness first but I think it'll work.

Use Goo Gone. You can (cheaply) buy it online or at almost any store. It works FAST and has a strong but pleasant citrus scent. It works like a miracle. I had gum stuck on a skirt for over a year and scrubbing, scrapping, and icing it didn't help... most of those solutions actually made it worse. I sprayed a little bit of Goo Gone onto the gum, rubbed it in with a damp cloth, and in seconds it was gone and my skirt was once again wearable. I can also attest it works the same way with gum in carpeting, and just as quickly.
Good luck! :)

If you go to Robbie's Handy Household Tips and Tricks: Laundry Tips & Tricks it says to brush egg whites on the gum and let it stand for 15 minutes, this is for gum on clothes but carpet is sometimes made out of the samething clothes are so I don't see why it would not work on your carpet. After the 15 minutes is up use a teaspoon of laundry soap and hot water to scrub the spot and the gum should come up.

Get a can of compressed air (usually can find some in the electronic department of most stores). Spray this directly on the gum for a minute or so (it gets very cold rapidly) until it is frozen solid. Then it will chip right out. This method uses the same cooling principle as refrigerators and air conditioners. When compressed air is released it expands and cools.

U should have used peanut butter as soon as u noticed the gum or cleaned it up before letting it go so long. It may be too late to salvage except to cut it out with scissors or shears.
