these bonds are signed & dated from 1864 & are in reference to SAID CITY & COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO & I have approximately 40 of these bonds

Depending on the face value, it may be worth it to see if the bonds could be redeemed. Go to http://www.sfgov.org/site/treasurer_index.asp for contact info.

Alternately if they're of a disavowed series, they could still have numismatic value. If there's a shop nearby that deals in collectible stamps, celebrity autographs, and the like, try going there.

Forward copies to the office of the "Comptroller" requesting payment. There will be a quick response that will head you to the City's position about the value of the bonds.

any bank in your area should be able to steer you in the direction to help you with the bonds. congrats on those bonds of that age your a rich person!
