i know how to make my pic black and white, but i want to know how to leave something in the pic its original color with the rest being black and white. i read that you use the lasso tool but i just cant figure it out

You'll have to cut the color part out from the rest of the photo. The lasso tool will probably be too sloppy. You'd be better off copying the picture into a new layer and erasing the B/W part with the eraser tool. Personally the best way would be using the pen tool to create a path. BUt that takes a lot of practice.

Use the magic wand or the magnetic lasso to select the elements that you want to leave colored. If you don't know how to use these tools in this page you'll find some video tutorials:

When you have done your selection go to Select menu and click on Inverse: this will select all but the elements you selected before.
Now go to Image menu, click on Adjust and then on Desaturate.
