For about a week our yellow parakeet started falling off his perch. His legs seem very weak. His droppings are sort of loose. Actually the droppings cling to his rear and dry. We have to carefully cleanse him every other day or so. He stays huddled in the bottom of his cage and sleeps most of the time. His appetite remains good, in fact maybe better than usual. He eats nutriberries, which are mostly seeds, and avicakes, which are also mostly seeds. When he is well, he will eat peas, corn, brocolli, bread. Lately he doesn't eat his veggies very well. I would say his legs seem like they are paralyzed and very weak. He tries to walk, but he just kind of flops along. I read that if a bird has paralysis give him Vitamin E, so we have been putting a drop or two of Vitamin E on some spray millet and he eats it very well.
I don't like to take him to a vet because it might stress him out and I'm not sure there is anything to be done for him. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

I have bred budgies for about 30 years. Do not spend money on going to a vet yet as there is a remedy that mostly works. It needs to be exactly followed.

Take sme brandy and mix it with water - 1 part brandy 10 parts water. Give the bird about 3 drops using an eye dropper. You will need to hold its beak open to give it to it. It will be drunk for a while, but this may well cure it.

I would definately call a vet and schedule an appt. It sounds like many things are going wrong with your bird. This could be anything from a stroke to zinc poisoning or just that your bird is getting old and dying (sorry but being honest here). Only a vet can take a few drops of blood and determine what's going on.

I would find a avian vet! He may have lead/zinc poisening which causes them to lose their motor skills, it is a nuerologicical attack. He could have had a stroke! Birds do have strokes! I would make an area for him to perch on something flat and have a wash rag to lean on till you can get some blood work done and find out what is the culprit.

Could be old age. Eleven is pretty darned old for a budgie.
