One thing you could try to do is widen your swing and when reach the top of your swing do not allow your wrists to go higher than the line of our shoulders.
It sounds to me as well that you have a problem with consistency. You should not be trying to hit the ball too far, and should concentrate solely on accuracy and rhythm of your swing.
If you are swinging too fast then it seems likely that you are using your arms and not your midriff to generate distance. A key area is to strengthen stomach muscles, and shoulder and back muscles by regular exercise, also try doing Pilates classes to help increase your core strength. If you use your stomach more and your arm speed less eventually you will hit the ball way over 300 yards consistently.
Another trick to slow down your arm speed is to roll up a towel and hold it under your armpits. Then play your shot. If the towel drops from under either armpit then you lack control of your swing, try not to let it drop (this was one of the first lessons I learned as a child from my then Club Pro).

you could try swinging with a very heavy thing that i the same length and thickness of your clubs. this will make you slow down when practicing otherwise you will lose all control of the swing and fall over. this will also build up the critical muscles for hitting the ball so you will be able to hit the ball further using a slower swing. when you swing a club afer swinging the heavy thing it will feel like you are swinging way faster but you will be swinging slower than originally as you will end up concentrating more on tempo and the correct swing than speed and trying to hit the ball a long way. you will hit the ball further wth correct timing than with a faster speed

The best advise I can give you is to watch the ladies play. Just concentrate on the their swing tempo, they do not "thrash" at the ball.
Also go up the range, and try to slow your swing down, the club is their to do the work. You do not need to hit the living daylights out of it.

The best advice I have evere been given as my swing can accelerate past a ferrari, is to slow your breathing right down on the final address to the ball, and eventually after enough time and practice you will be doing it second nature.

slowing down the swing will not help you hit it further. Perhaps your swing is fast enough, but your body is not moving in sync with the clubhead speed. Make sure the fastest part of your swing is after you make contact with the ball.

imagine a swimmer on the starting block his arms are loose and free take your swing back loose and free and just let the club follow though the hitting zone with out trying to add extra power some of my longest drives happen when im not overly aggressive and youll be amazed at how far you can hit it to stay loose thanks.

In order to promote good rhythm,go to the driving range and hit balls using a 5 iron, say, whilst standing with your feet together. You will be surprised how far you can hit balls using this exercise. You can hopefully take this new found rhythm with you when hitting the driver.
Good luck!

All my coach had to tell me is this....Tiger Woods hits his driver at the speed at the count of 1-2-3. The same as he does with his putting 1-2-3. Puts it all in perspective huh? It just goes to show that power helps...but timing is EVERYTHING.
