Sunscreen and a towel to lie on. If he is tired, he will nap. I know that some stores carry a baby tent that just pop open also. Also get sand toys and buckets. When you are ready to go, wipe him down with a towel just like you would do to yourself before you get in the car. Sand will always get in the car no matter what but that's how it goes. I lived by the beach for years and started taking my kids at about the same age (only because they are both July babies and I HAD to wait until the following year seeing that summer is the only time we can go).

Since he will be walking soon, be prepared to chase him around constantly. I never got to relax at the beach until my kids were 5.

I took my son to the beach last summer. He was about 9 months old. We set up a big umbrella with a blanket under it. I was worried that he would eat the sand to but he wanted nothing to do with the sand. He didn't even want to put his feet in the sand.

I brought a couple of toys, lots of water, tons of sunscreen. I applied it every half hour. He didn't take a nap until we left. He slept in the car.

As for the shower, I made sure the beach I went to had a shower. If you find one without, just bring wet ones with you to brush the sand off.

He might eat sand, but he will only do it once or twice before he decides it gross. As far as washing off the sand, as a body boarder (in Santa Cruz, CA) I put big jugs of warm water in the car. When you are out playing at the beach the car (park in the sun) will heat & keep those jugs warm...Then just use them to rinse yourself down. As far as napping at the beach you may find it hard to get him to want to nap. When I took my soon to the Caribbean he was 18mo. he just snoozed in a diaper on a lounge chair. If he'll sleep in a stroller you can try that, although it is hard to push in the sand! Take lots of suncreen, & sand toys. Don't forget a big balnket that is easy to shake clean. Also hats or sun shades(like an umbrella or tent) & an Ice chest with cool drinks & snacks! AND HAVE FUN!

Don't worry about it. I've taken my 2 sons to the beach when they were that young. First and foremost though is to keep them out of the sun by keeping them covered up or under an umbrella. Also, you need to watch that they don't get to hot. In terms of eating sand, it's really not that big of a deal. Typically, they'll only try it once and only put a little bit in their mouths. After that, they stop. Really, you should be more worried about them getting it in their eyes. Just make sure you have a bucket of water (preferably pool or faucet water and not ocean water) to watch their hands and face off. Finally, remember your camera because it's a blast watching them in the sand for the first time and you'll want to get some nice pictures. So take it easy, relax and enjoy watching them grow.

He will probably eat the sand, don't worry it won't hurt him. He might not take a nap, my son wouldn't. We put up an umbrella (bring one for him to sit under everyonce in a while) and put down a blanket but he refused to lay down. Bring some beach appropiate toys. Get a water jug(not one of the huge ones) and then when all done take him and raise him off and use a washcloth to help take off the sand.

Try to keep him out of direct sun and put sunblock on him anyway. Waterbabies is a good brand. But, don't put it on his hands or face - you don't want him to eat it. Get a little hat for him and a big umbrella. If your blanket is large enough, you'll be able to catch him before he makes it to the sand to eat it. (And if he eats a couple of grains, no big deal. Look what those wackos on Survivor eat.) As far as getting the sand off of him - baby powder. Buy a large cheapie one and douse him with it and brush the sand off. (It works for you too!) Otherwise, some bottled water to rinse him off with. Don't plan on spending all day at the beach either - an hour or two will be plenty.

Mine eats sand at the olayground. It's not a big deal.

Just brush the sand off once it is dry and bath him when you get home if you are really concerned.

Also be sure to bring some serious shade. I know the FDA now says you can but sunscreen on kids 6 months and up but I would use caution. You can get more natural sunblockers that use metals that do not absorb into the skin that are safer for everyone.

An umbrella, sunblock, a blanket, some buckets/beach toys
He can nap on a blanket under an umbrella
Stop worrying...a couple of hours will be good just keep him under the umbrella.
If he gets sand, wash it off, all beaches have an outdoor shower

You will need sun screen, umbrella, diapers, wipes, snack and towels.
As far as a nap you lay him on a towel under the unbrella and let him sleep. Just make sure someone stays with him. He may not sleep but if your schedule gets interupted it isn't the end of the world. He will sleep on the way home in the car.

He may very well eat some sand, but it won't kill him. He will poo it out. You may be changing some sandy diapers.

New mom aren't you???? You gotta learn to roll with the punches otherwise you will never leave the house.

Ok, this is what I did with my daughter and with all of my nieces and my nephew. Bring a portable play pen, an umbrella and baby powder! I live in CA and have lots of experience with this, LOL!
Put the baby in the play pen with the umbrella over it and he'll nap. Sand won't hurt him, once he gets it in his mouth, he won't like it and he won't keep doing it! As far as the sand coming off, rub baby powder all over him and it will just fall right off! Good luck, you can do it!
