If my milk has a "sell by" date on it, does that mean it needs to be consumed by then or just purchased by then and, if that's the case, how long is the milk acutally good?

if the milk says "sell by 01/11/07" it just means today is the last day the store can sell you the milk. after this day they are supposed to throw it out, it should still be good for a week.

Good rule of thumb : WHEN IN DOUBT POUR OT OUT !!!
I always check the dates when I purchase Milk , I'm even one of the people that you see grabbing the milk in the back of the shelf to check for the longest date ! YES, I DO discard milk by the expiration date on the carton ! Can't stomach the thoughts of going pass the date shown on the product !

Milk should keep a week past that Sell By date IF it is kept refrigerated properly. Those who leave milk jug on the table during the meal will find it going bad sooner. Milk actually becomes sweeter a day or so before souring. If you notice this sweetness, use it up that day or pour whats left down the sink.

the "SELL BY" date is the date to which groceries stores are legally allowed to sell the product. There is no timer on the milk carton to say that it will spoil as soon as the sell by date is reached. On some products there is a "USE BY" date. Again the product will not automatically spoil as soon as this date is reached. Companies test their products and this date indicates that at which the product has it maximum freshness. After this date the product is still edible but the quality deteriorates from that point forward

Sell by is the deadline for the retailer to sell it before they throw it away. it is drinkable for atleast a week after that date.
