From my visit to London, I would say:
Cost $ - It seemed a little more expensive in London, but that was due to the lousy exchange rate. Food and transportation was definitely a little more than NYC.
Safety - Very similar - When you know where you are going and how to get there, both cities seem the same to me. Of course, I am from NYC, so I feel safest here! But I never felt un-safe in London, even at night.
Ease of Travel - NYC is a little easier because the city is laid out in a numbered grid system for the most part. Very easy to follow the general North/South and East/West direction of streets. Both subway systems are well organized, but NYC is a little easier.
Entertainment - I think as far as culture and history, London has a lot more to offer. As far as arts/theater, it is pretty close. The West End theaters and Broadway will often have the same shows running. NYC has a better variety of bars/clubs, as it seems like most places in London are more pub-style. There are nowhere near as many pubs in NYC and I think there is more variety in the types of bars/clubs/restaurants. NYC probably has an edge here, depending on the type of entertainment you like.
Hope that helps!

Cost: Both are expensive. If you know either city well, you can get by rather cheaply and still have a good time. In either one, you can also spend a lot and get a little if you're not careful. I lived in NYC for years and enjoyed it a lot. I've visited London with someone who knows the city, and enjoyed that very much also. I plan to go back.
Safety: Stay away from "bad" areas and you're likely to be OK in either city if you take reasonable precautions. Be aware that there will be pick-pockets and purse-snatchers in crowds in both cities.
Ease of travel: You can get anywhere by rail, bus or cab in either city. London seems a bit more convenient to me.
Entertainment: You can spend a long, long time being "entertained" in either city. If you're an Anglophile and love history, London wins. If it is theatre and nightspots you want, NYC wins.

Cost: The US dollar is very weak at the moment (worth about half of the GDP), so you'll get much more bang for your buck in NYC. Everything in NYC is generally cheaper than in the UK - I've noticed that food is much cheaper in US than anywhere else in the world.
Safety: NYC was recently named the safest big city in the U.S. It's much safer than London - where you always have to look out to make sure you're not being pickpocketed. Seriously, I couldn't even leave my hangbag hanging across the back of my chair at a restaurant - the proprietor told me to put it in my lap or else it will definitely be stolen.
Ease of travel: The NYC subway system is much cheaper, nicer and easier to comprehend than the London tube.
Entertainment: NYC is the city that never sleeps. Seriously, we have some of the best bars and restaurants - also much larger range of choices than London.

ease of travel: In NYC travelling is a breeze; for $2 one way on the nyc subway or city bus will take you anyway
Entertainment: Times Square is filled with broadway shows and depending on how warm the weather is you might see the Naked Cowboy or the Naked Cowgirl or both and of course the street entertainers.
safety: NYC is relatively safe
cost: NYC is an expensive city, so yeah you will have to bring a lot of money.
