You can go to a tax preparer. If you go to one of the chain tax preparation firms, tell them you have back taxes from 2004 and 2005 to file and ask that they give you someone who can do this quickly for you. These firms do this all the time and it may be the least stressful for you.

But you can certainly file yourself. Go to irs.gov and print out the forms you need, fill them out, and mail them in. You cannot file prior year returns electronically.

You can go to www.irs.gov and download 1040 forms for those years (you have to match each year to the right form because of changes in the code each year).

The IRS will only audit the current year and 3 previous years, so there's no reason to file past years beyond that. Also, I believe you can claim refunds only for 3 previous years.

Mail them to the IRS just as you would have back then, when they were originally due.
