Don't make it slow and painful, that is bad for everyone. Not to sound insensitive- just use the Band Aid approach. It doesn't hurt as bad it you take it off fast. Also, for a little while you cannot remain friends. You can become friends later- just works out better, they don't feel like their being strung along.

The best way to break up with a girl is to have an in person conversation with her. Start by telling her all the things that attracted you to her in the first place and then all the things you discovered about her that you really liked then gently tell her that you can't see her anymore and the reasons behind your decision.
It's called letting her down easy. By building her up and making her feel good about herself it eases the pain of rejection. Just don't be tortorous about why your breaking up with her and totally contradict everything good you just said about her or you'll shoot yourself in the foot. Good Luck

Tell her she's been wonderful, but you aren't attracted to her in that way anymore. You really appreciate her as a person, and you'd like to remain 'friends' with her...isn't that the line they pull on us?
And return her pink hair dye before you go...

Be honest, tell her it just is not working out. You both deserve someone who is totally delighted to be with you.
